NE Rowing Sculling Series - Tyne stage - Saturday 31st October 2009

An unusually warm and sunny day greeted Berwick rowers who made their way to the Tyne at Newburn for the latest  round of the Long Distance sculling series.  Rowing the 5000 metre course from Scotswood to Newburn the first boat up the Tyne for Berwick was ladies senior double Alison Inglis and Hilary Cairns.  The ladies were quite determined to make up for their narrow defeat on the Tees.  Alison and Hilary pressured their Durham opponents right from the start sculling confidently and strongly.  By half way the Berwick ladies passed their Durham opponents.  Alison and Hilary sculled on strongly to win in 18 mins 18 sec 30 seconds ahead of the next ladies double scull.  Sam Seaton teamed up with Ian Smith in a mixed Vet double.  The pair put in a creditable performance in their first race together.  Harry Black made an impressive return to form in Vet D single sculls.  Using his experience and knowledge of the Tyne course Harry took the win by 18 seconds over scullers from Talkin Tarn, Tees and club mate Robin Morrison.  Alan Robertson competing in his first single sculling race for 20 years showed that he still has what it takes to win the Vet G single category.  Rob Harvey and Jamie Martin also competed in single sculls and posted good times for their first experience over the Tyne course.  Newly formed Club Tyne United ran a Small Boat Head of the river over the same 5000 metre course but with scullers this time having to row against the strength of the out going tide.  All the Berwick members were taking part in their second race of the day and found their fitness was tested.  Berwick ladies Alison Inglis, Sam Seaton and Hilary Cairns teamed up with Cambois sculler Sarah Wright in quad sculls.  The ladies were delighted to take the win as fastest female boat by 2.5 seconds.  Ian Smith and Harry Black and David Cairns and Rob Harvey contested Vet D and B double sculls with both crews being pleased with their race.  Young Jamie Martin rose to the challenge of racing a single scull twice in one day, a feat which no other Berwick sculler was prepared to take on.  Jamie sculled well in the difficult fast moving tide to complete the course for a second time.  Berwick scullers would like to thank Lloyd Ltd for the use of a vehicle to pull the boat trailer.  The final round of the sculling series takes place on Saturday 7th November at Wansbeck.

NE Rowing Sculling Series - Tees stage - Saturday 24th October 2009

With two of the six long distance sculling series events being cancelled, Berwick’s rowers were ready for Saturday’s event at Stockton on Tees.  This year’s event had attracted a massive 160 entries from clubs all over the north east and clubs as far afield as Aberdeen and Nottingham, with quad sculls, double sculls and single sculls.  The course is well-known for its many horseshoe bends making it a very difficult course to manoeuvre.  Weather conditions were surprisingly good for the two Berwick ladies crews taking part in the 5000 metre timed event.  Fastest boat of the morning was a Men’s Intermediate 1 coxless quad from York City, with a very impressive time of 16:28.9.  Women’s senior double scull, Alison Inglis and Hilary Cairns were first of the Berwick boats off, chasing their opponents from Durham ARC down the Tees.  The Berwick ladies sculled well, steered an excellent course and managed to make up some time on the well drilled Durham crew, but alas it wasn’t quite enough, with the Berwick crew losing out by just 6 hundredths of a second, finishing in a time of 20:15.6.  They finished 2nd women’s double scull and 42nd overall out of 145 boats.  It was first time steering the course for Sam Seaton, doubling up with Estelle Dodd in Women’s Intermediate 2 double scull.  Although they had no direct competition, they steered and sculled the course very well in a respectable finishing time of 24:26.3.  The series moves to the River Tyne next week where seven Berwick crews will be competing over the 5500 metre course.  The Berwick ladies would like to thank Sam Seaton and Nixon Hire for the use of their vehicle to transport the boats.

Boston Marathon - Sunday 20th September 2009

Another small piece of history was written in the books of Berwick Amateur Rowing Club on Sunday 20th September when the first all ladies crew from the club completed the Boston Rowing Marathon.  Alison Inglis and Hilary Cairns took on the gruelling 31 mile 50 kilometre race from Lincoln to Boston.  Starting in glorious sunshine in Lincoln the ladies set off on their journey first on a canal for 13.5 kilometres then having to get out of the boat and carry it a short distance to the river Witham.  Once back in the boat and with the race clock continually running the ladies set off again.  Having reached the half way point in reasonably good shape all that was left to do was the same distance again!  The sun continued to shine making a very pleasant day for spectators.  For those on the river the heat was just about becoming unbearable.  However once the ladies were at the 45 kilometre mark they picked up again as they are more than used to racing the 5km distance to the finish  Just not after having already covered 9 times that distance.  After 4 Hours 14 minutes and 54 seconds with a few blisters and aches Alison and Hilary arrived in Boston giving them an overall finish position of 64th out of 190 starters in all boat classes.

Berwick Regatta - Saturday 20th June 2009

BERWICK rowers took to their home water on Saturday at West Ord for the club's 140th anniversary McCreath Simpson & Prentice Ltd Regatta.  First rowers on the water for Berwick, in a semi final of Women's Vet B/C/D double sculls, were Alison Inglis/Hilary Cairns against George Watson's. Due to the veteran handicap system, the Berwick ladies had to give their opponents a 10 second start. They quickly made up the time going on to win by four lengths, and to meet another crew from George Watson's in the final. After another handicap start, Inglis/Cairns sculled confidently down the course seeing off their opponents to give them their first win of the day.  Inglis/Cairns double sculled again in the Women's Senior event against Talkin Tarn. After a hard fought first half Berwick edged their bows in front and moved on to win by clear water.  Harry Black and Robin Morrison were up against one another in the semi-final of Vet B/D single sculls. Both men sculled extremely well on their home water but Morrison piled on the pressure and took the win over Black, putting him in the final against Cambois.  The handicap was to Morrison's advantage but the Cambois sculler was not going to give up without a fight. Morrison managed to stay ahead to win by a length.  One of the exciting wins of the day was from Novice double scullers, Phil Craze/Rob Harvey. After a very hard and close fought race against their opponents from Cambois, Berwick took the win and very happily lost their novice status. The duo went their separate ways and took to the Novice single sculls event. Harvey was up against Cambois in the semi-final, after a nervous start he was two lengths down but relaxed and sculled very well to the finish, with the win going to the more practised Cambois sculler. It was Craze's turn to compete against the sculler from Cambois in the final. After a good start from Craze, Cambois took the lead and went on to win by a length.  Estelle Dodd/Sam Seaton were up next in the Women's IM2 double sculls event against Talkin Tarn. This proved to be a tough start for the Berwick double with Tarn taking the lead, Berwick kept their cool, made up lost ground, with both boats level towards the finish Berwick lifted their rating and victory was theirs by two feet.  The Senior single sculls event and much sought after title of "King of the Tweed" saw Christopher Eke get a bye through to the final but unfortunately it was not to be the Berwick's scullers day with Holmes from George Watson's taking the title. Eke then teamed up with Morrison in IM2 double sculls against a very well drilled crew from Talkin Tarn. Tarn took the lead and managed to stay ahead of the Berwick crew by a length.  Rowena Park took to a single scull in Women's IM3 single sculls semi final against George Watson's. It was a closely fought race but Park managed to keep the pressure on to the finish and win by ¾ of a length. Park was up against Talkin Tarn in the final. Tarn took the lead off the start but Park powered through her opponent winning by a length and a half.  Next into a single scull was Alison Inglis in Women's IM2 single sculls. Inglis was down off the start but sculled strongly to gradually take the lead and power through to the finish to gain her a 3rd win of the day.  Ian Smith and Alan Robertson had their hardest race of the season against George Watson's in Veteran F/G doubles losing out on a win by just two feet after a very close race.  Regatta controller David Cairns and Harry Black teamed up in Veteran B/C double sculls. The more practised crew from Cambois took the lead from the start and Berwick were unable to make up the distance. Also in this event were Harvey/Craze who had a bye through to the final, this put them up against the more experienced crew from Cambois. They rowed their best and cleanest race of the day, but were well beaten by 2 lengths.  Berwick ladies, Alison Inglis, Estelle Dodd, Sam Seaton and Hilary Cairns joined forces in the Women's IM2 Coxless Quad sculls. They were up against a much younger crew from Talkin Tarn. After an excellent start, the ladies settled in to a strong but comfortable pace, over hauling their opposition to give them a slot in the final against George Watsons. In the final the ladies were able to replicate their previous race, finishing even stronger to give them a final victory of the day.  Berwick would like to thank their sponsors as without their generous support it would not be possible to stage their home regatta. Special thanks also go to the Lang Family enabling the club to hold the regatta at West Ord

Tees Regatta - Saturday 16th May 2009

Bright Sunshine mixed with very heavy rain showers met the Berwick rowers who travelled to Stockton on Tees for their annual regatta.  The Tees regatta has been growing in size since the formation of the Tees Barrage and on Saturday attracted crews from Peterborough in the South to Berwick in the North with many clubs in between.  This set up some great racing with challenging opposition for the 5 travelling Berwick crews.  Sam Seaton and Estelle Dodd opened the days racing for Berwick with a very smooth performance in IM3 double sculls taking them straight into the final.  The four boat final put them up against Yarm School, Leeds and Tees.  Yarm School went from the start but did not have the race their own way as the Berwick ladies stuck with them keeping the pressure on never allowing them to open up clear water.  Despite sculling brilliantly Berwick could not close the narrow gap on Yarm giving them a very creditable 2nd place out of 8 starting crews.  Phil Craze and Rob Harvey in Novice double sculls finished second in their heat forcing them to go through the repecharge to gain a place in the final.  The men did very well in the repecharge to claim their final place.  The final saw very strong opposition from St Peters School York but the Berwick crew worked hard and should take heart from their 2nd place finish in a heavily fought contest.  Later in the day Rob and Phil competed again in Veteran Novice double sculls again qualifying comfortably for the final setting up a tough race against Hull, York and Tees.  At the half way stage Berwick were trailing in third place but made a huge push over the last 300m to be beaten into second place by 3ft again a very encouraging result.  Rob and Phil then teamed up with Ladies IM3 double Estelle Dodd and Sam Seaton to take part in the hotly contested Veteran Double sculls.  Both doubles very much enjoyed the experience but did not manage to qualify for the final which was won by a very polished double from Tees.  Robin Morrison was Berwick’s only single sculling competitor.  In Vet D sculls he came up against unknown opponents from Leeds, Ancholme and Hull.  Making a good start gave Robin a slight lead at the half way mark but the Leeds sculler was not going down without a fight and hitting a buoy in the closing stages may have cost Robin the race as the Leeds sculler came through to take the win by ½ length.  Robin also competed in Novice single sculls sculling well in his heat to put him into a very strong final field of 4.  Again Robin sculled well from the start but the youth of the Durham University sculler was too much as he overhauled Robin in the second half of the race to win by 2 lengths.  Ian Smith and Alan Robertson moved to Vet G double sculls and took on two Tees crews.  Ian and Alan are a very experienced double scull who were able to ensure they sculled straight down their lane and made light work of over coming both of their Tees opponents winning by 2 lengths.  Alison Inglis and Hilary Cairns took on Peterborough in Vet B/C double sculls.  As Berwick were the younger crew they gave their C crew opponents a 5 second start this took the pressure off the Berwick pair at the start and allowed them to very quickly find their pace.  By half way Alison and Hilary had caught their opponents and went on to win by 3 lengths.  Later in the day after a massive thunderstorm had passed Alison and Hilary took to the water in IM2 double sculls against Talkin Tarn.  Full of confidence after their earlier victory the ladies made a good start and led from start to finish claiming their second victory of the day.  The travelling members of Berwick would like to express their thanks to Nixon Hire Ltd for the use of their vehicle and fuel to pull the boat trailer.  Anyone wishing to try rowing will be made very welcome at the boathouse at 6.15pm on Tuesday evenings.

Strathclyde Regatta - Sunday 26th April 2009

The beginning of the new rowing season was met with relish by the 7 athletes who travelled to Strathclyde Park on Sunday.  The regatta run by The Scottish Amateur Rowing association is one of the biggest regattas of the season.  Racing is held on the international 8 lane course with race distances varying between 1000 and 2000 meters depending on boat category.  As always the standard of racing was exceptionally high.  The first Berwick representation was Harry Black and Alan Robertson in a composite Veteran E quad scull.  Harry and Alan teamed up with scullers from St Andrew Boat Club and Strathclyde Park Boat Club.  As Berwick were the slightly older crew they were given a handicap start over their Inverness/St Andrew opponents.  Sculling steadily to capitalise on their handicap start the Berwick Crew made good progress.  However the Inverness/St Andrew crew put up a good fight and as the race entered the closing stages it looked as if Berwick might just have been caught.  But they were in control of their destiny and stayed ahead to take Berwick’s first the win of the season by ½ length.  While the Quad races were taking place Robin Morrison Berwick’s Vet D sculler was making his way to the start.  In a strong field of 6 Robin sculled steadily from the start but in a small single sculling boat found the increasing cross wind was pushing him out of his lane.  While Robin steered back into his lane the Durham sculler took his opportunity and opened up a lead over Robin and the rest of the chasing pack.  Robin hung on with determination to take a well deserved 2nd place.  Alison Inglis and Hilary Cairns were next onto the water for Berwick in Ladies Veteran B double sculls.  This event was combined with Veteran A to give a 7 boat race.  In a very competitive race Alison and Hilary did not make the best of starts but as usual sculled very strongly through the middle stages to put themselves ½ a length in front coming into the last 250 meters.  However previous leaders Durham responded to the challenge and increased their stroke rate significantly to take the win with St Andrew going with them to push the Berwick Ladies into 3rd place. Chris Eke was Berwick’s only oarsman over the long 2000 meter course taking part in R1 single sculls.  Chris made a good start but the strong cross winds in the middle of the lake proved a bigger problem to Chris than to his opponent from Inverness this allowed the Inverness sculler to open up a two length lead over Chris which he was able to hold onto to take the win.  Berwick’s final boat of the day was Phil Craze and Rob Harvey in the 15 boat strong novice double sculls.  There were 3 heats with the first 2 boats from each heat making the final.  Phil and Rob were drawn in the second and strongest of the heats.  By the time the men made their way to the 1000 meter start the persistent cross wind had strengthened in force causing the regatta officials to start the boats from a free start rather than fight to line the boats up on the usual stake boats in the very difficult conditions.  Phil and Rob make the break from the start but were being chased hard by Dundee who then clashed with Berwick as they fought the strong cross winds.  Berwick regained their composure but found conditions testing.  Coming into the last 250 meters 1 crew was clear and a remaining 3 including Berwick were battling it out for the remaining 1 place in the final.  Unfortunately Dundee and Berwick moved towards each other and again clashed leaving Clydesdale to push on and claim 2nd place and the last qualifying place for the final.  The Berwick competitors would like to extend their most sincere thanks to Lloyd Ltd, Kelso for the use of a vehicle and fuel to pull the boat trailer.

English Indoor Rowing Championships - Sunday 8th February 2009

Phil Craze was the only club member to head south to the English Champs after his winning success at Edinburgh.  Phil firstly competed in the Men's 30-39 HWT and once again struck gold in the 2k event in a time of 6:21.3.  He later went on to race in the 500m sprint, which he completed in 1:24.8 and in 5th position.

Scottish Indoor Rowing Championships - Sunday 1st February 2009

The Scottish Indoor Rowing Championships took place at Herriot Watt University Sport Centre in Edinburgh on the 1st Feb. There were a record number of entrants from all over the UK with over 400 individuals competing in 31 races with ages ranging from boys and girls under 11’s through to over 60’s. Racing was well organised with races taking place on 20 indoor rowing machines in front of a large cinema sized screen showing rowers and spectators the race order as it was happening.  Two club members from Berwick ARC competed.  Alison Inglis entered the event for the first time, competing in the Women’s Over 30’s 1609m (1 mile).  Alison got off to a flying start, gaining and maintaining a comfortable lead throughout, finishing the distance with a personal best time of 6:02.2 and ahead of the field by 22 seconds, to take the Gold medal position.  Next up was Phil Craze in the Over 30’s 1609m hoping to go one better than the silver won in last years shorter 1000m event. Phil stuck to his game plan of starting hard, then settling into a steady pace. After just 100m Phil was ahead of his rivals and slowly pulling ahead, eventually opening up and maintaining an unassailable 25m lead to cross the line in Gold medal position in a time of 5:03.0.  Phil then joined work colleagues from AEGON UK to enter into the Men’s team relay in the last event of the day. There were three other teams in the event. One from Clydesdale ARC, which contained full time rowers aiming for the 2012 Olympics, plus another from the Royal Navy. The event was rowed over 2000m with teams of 4 rowers jumping on and off as many times as they like. It was a frantic affair right from the start as you can imagine, but both AEGON and Clydesdale started to pull away from the rest and it was obvious to all watching that it was going to be close with the lead changing all the time. There really was nothing between the teams with 200m to go but the final changeover to Phil went as well as it could have and the momentum was back with the team from AEGON UK. Phil managed to dig deep and cross the line less than 2 seconds ahead in a time of 5:23. This rounded off a very successful raid north of the border for the Berwick rowers.  Phil will be heading south of the border next weekend to try his luck at the English Indoor Championships.
